Feb 7 meeting: What makes KM work in your industry

KM Chicago will meet on Tuesday, February 7 at 5:30,to learn about recent research findings on critical success factors for KM success. Note that the meeting will be at a new site. Please see location details and dial-in information in the sidebar. Meetings are free to all and no registration is required.

CurtisConley will discuss the results of his doctoral research on the criticalsuccess factors (CSFs) for knowledge management. Curtis will present a summaryof current thinking around the most critical factors for KM, the results of hisstudy, what differences do (and don't) exist between different industries,organizations of different sizes, different geographic regions, etc., andultimately share a new framework of CSFs for KM developed as a result of thestudy.

The goal of the discussion will be to sharewhat factors may be most applicable to your organization, and to see if theexperience of KM Chicago members line up with the results of this study.

Curtis earned his doctorate in AdultEducation with a cognate in Knowledge Management from Northern IllinoisUniversity. His research interestsinclude knowledge management, organizational learning, social media, andenterprise collaboration. Curtis also works as a Community Coordinator withinthe Global Consulting Knowledge Management group at Deloitte. There he workswith community moderators to launch and maintain successful communities ofpractice.

With the second Tues being Valentine’s Day, we’re switchingto the first Tuesday just this one time. But as usual, the program will startat 5:30 and be available on site and virtually via LiveMeeting.

The time for KM Chicago board elections is coming up soon. If you have an interest in volunteering to help organize meetings, identify topics and speakers, please let us know. The amount of work is negligible (~30 minutes each month), and it's a great way to expand your network with other KM professionals within and outside of the Chicagoland area. If you have any questions or would like more information, please just let me know.

In addition to new members, KM Chicago is also looking for new locations where we can have our monthly meetings. Factiva has been kind enough to host us for several years, but will only be able to do so in a limited fashion moving forward. If you have access to meeting space in the loop that may be able to accommodate KM Chicago please do let us know. If we have multiple options available to us we would be able to alternate locations when needed (so you wouldn't be on the hook to host every meeting!). Once again if you would like to volunteer, have any questions or need more details please do let me know.

KM Chicago October 11th meeting, with Jeff Merrell

What happens when you ask graduate students -- all experienced business and not-for-profit managers -- to think about KM as tightly integrated with organizational learning and change? For the past 10 years, knowledge management has been a core part of the curriculum at the Master's Program in Learning & Organizational Change at Northwestern University (MSLOC). Jeff Merrell will share insights that make the case for the value of KM as a discipline and shed light on KM’s role in the greater organizational system. He will also share how the program has used collaboration technology to change its own learning and knowledge sharing environment.

Jeff Merrell is Associate Director of the Master's Program in Learning & Organizational Change (MSLOC) and the Center for Learning & Organizational Change (CLOC). At MSLOC he teaches the program's organizational knowledge management course and is faculty adviser for student Practicum projects. Through the CLOC he manages the development of new Practicum projects with for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Jeff's professional background includes experience as both a consultant and corporate leader in organizational learning and knowledge management. He is founder of Purple Line Associates, a consultancy and research practice established in 2001 to help organizations define knowledge sharing and collaboration strategies and to implement new technologies and practices. His consulting work includes projects for global leaders in the pharmaceutical and retail industries as well as not-for-profit and federal government organizations.

Cruise the River with KM Chicago July 12!

Please join your KM Chicago friends and colleagues on Tues, July 12, at the base of Wacker Drive and Michigan Avenue (400 N. Michigan) for the 6 PM combined river and lake architectectural cruise. The narrated cruise is 90 minutes and covers both the Chicago River and a trip through the locks into Lake Michigan. There is a cash bar on the boat.

Each person is responsible for purchasing his or her own ticket. We recommend online purchase at www.wendellaboats.com. These trips sell out in the summer even during the week so please buy a few days in advance to avoid disappointment. Arrive at the dock at least 15 minutes prior to departure. Purchased online, the cruise is $24.70.

Following the cruise, please join us for dinner at Catch 35. The restaurant is at 35 W. Wacker Dr. in the Leo Burnett Building, a few minutes walk from the dock. Reservations are for 7:45. June 14: Jean Keleher on KM at the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center

At KM Chicago's regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 14, Jean Keleher will tell us about her work at the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Jean will discuss the implementation of the Bioenergy Hub, an internal collaboration platform for scientsts and staff at the GLBRC.

The mission of the GLBRC is to develop sustainable fuels; Jean's role is to make sure that the scientists working there can conveniently collaborate and share information.

Social Search Engines: Social media are a new way to contribute digital content, so we need better ways to search for this content than the big search engines offer.

The emergence of social media means a new and different way for people to contribute digital content. Likewise, it means we need new ways to search for and find this new content. The big search engines don't necessarily focus on finding this content. This session will provide an overview of some search engines that help you find information in the social media. At the end of this session, you should be able to:

Understand why we want to search and participate in the social media
Understand what types of search engines are available on the public Internet that allow you to search social content.

During our February meeting Kate Pugh walked our community through the process of a Knowledge Jam, and shared insights from her then-upcoming book Sharing Hidden Know-How, now shipping on Amazon.

Please join us for our April 12th meeting: Commercial Sector Applications of Geographic Information Systems. Attendee information is located in the right pane of the KM Chicago blog.

Corporate entities and their manufacturing plants, warehouses, suppliers and other partners, all have something in common –association with locations. A geographic information system (GIS) assists in the processing, analysis, and visualization of corporate knowledge that pertains to place. Corporations have been using GIS tools to perform site selection, risk management, territory creation, routing, supply chain analysis, asset tracking, regulatory compliance, and workforce management.

Dr. Charles Linville, Founder and President of Ploughman Analytics, will describe a number of applications of GIS in the private sector, drawing attention to the capacity of a GIS create new knowledge as well as to communicate spatial information. In particular, he will discuss site selection and location analysis, the examination of logistics networks and their impact on market territories, and applications of satellite image processing.

Dr. Linville developed the first recurring course in geographic information systems at American University in DC, and played a key role in establishing the GIS group at Archer Daniels Midland, where he was Manager of Knowledge and Data Engineering and then Director of Analytics and Knowledge Systems. Ploughman Analytics, founded in 2007, is a consultancy and software development group in the Research Park of the University of Illinois. Its practice includes GIS, business intelligence and data warehousing, operations research, and knowledge management.

January 11th Meeting: New Year's Knowledge Management Resolution

As defined on Wikipedia, a New Year's Resolution is, "a commitment that an individual makes to a personal goal, project, or the reforming of a habit." Given that definition, do you have any Knowledge Management resolutions that you will be making this year? It could be anything from an exciting new project you'll be working on, or simply the resolution to stop doing something that isn't working now.

Welcoming the new year, on January 11th KM Chicago will host a roundtable discussion on this topic.

December KM Chicago Holiday Celebration

Our KM Chicago meeting on Tuesday, 14 December will be a little different. On this day we will celebrate the 10th year of the holiday wine tasting hosted by Randy Russell and Wine Expressions. Randy is a Board member of KM Chicago and has shared his knowledge of wine with us in each of the last 10 years.

Randy will present 6 wines and food pairings matched to the wines. Each of these wines is chosen for its versatility and usefulness in planning holiday parties. The cost of the event will be $20/person. Bring yourself; bring a friend or a business associate. This is a fun event that encourages knowledge sharing and social networking.

The event will start at 5:30 PM at the Dow Jones location. For obvious reasons there will be no call in number and I guarantee no PowerPoint. There will be lively conversation and holiday cheer.

Please RSVP by end of day Friday, 10 December. This will allow Randy to select the wines in sufficient quantity and provide an ample supply of food. No one leaves hungry or thirsty. Money will be collected at the event in cash or check.

November 9th meeting: KM Metrics Roundtable

Please join us for a roundtable discussion on the topic of knowledge management measures and metrics. Purvi Kadakia, from Deloitte Consulting, will share how they currently use KM metrics as one approach to measuring the value of knowledge management. We encourage anyone who currently has this figured out or has a point of view related to KM metrics to bring forth their methods and ideas to share as well. We know from several past presentations on this topic that it’s always an area that sparks good conversation and debate.

Purvi Kadakia has been working in the area of metrics for knowledge management for 4 years. Having invested significant time and effort in the front- and back-end (using primarily Omniture) to enable these metrics, Purvi will share her experience with the technology that supports these metrics as well as examples of the end product and how it has evolved and matured.

Rebecca and Robin will deliver a presentation that includes practical dos and don'ts of enterprise prediction markets. They will share their thoughts on what makes it work and why as a medium for predicting the future, from the “father of prediction markets,” as well as success factors based on case studies that Consensus Point has experience with in implementing prediction markets technology into client organizations.

Rebecca Whitehead Munn is the Senior Vice President of Sales at Consensus Point, a prediction markets technology company.

Dr. Robin Hanson is the Chief Scientist at Consensus Point and is considered the “father of prediction markets.” At Consensus Point, he advises on innovative technologies and development of prediction markets, and consults with customers on market design, best practices and quantitative analysis. Dr. Hanson pioneered the field in 1988 as the first person to write in detail about using markets to improve forecasts and inform decisions. In 1990, he led the first internal corporate market.

Dr. Hanson, associate professor of economics, George Mason University, and research associate at Oxford University, received his Ph.D. in social science from California Institute of Technology and masters in physics and masters in the philosophy of science from University of Chicago. Robin has diverse research interests, with papers on spatial product competition, health incentive contracts, group insurance, product bans, evolutionary psychology and bioethics of health care, voter information incentives, incentives to fake expertize, Bayesian classification, agreeing to disagree, self-deception in disagreement, probability elicitation, wiretaps, image reconstruction, the history of science prizes, reversible computation, the origin of life, the survival of humanity, very long term economic growth, growth given machine intelligence, and interstellar colonization. “I also plan to continue to pursue my core areas of trying to understand better why we disagree, and trying to construct idea futures”

KM Chicago Summer Social Event - Tue, 13 Jul 2010

The annual KM Chicago summer social event will be held on Tuesday evening, 13 July in Millennium Park.

We will have a private tour that starts at 5:45 PM. Please arrive at the park by 5:30 so we can start the tour on time. The tour is called Millennium Park Revealed and is a guided tour presented by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. There is a public tour that begins at 5:30 so avoid that group.

The tour lasts about 1 hour.

Following the tour, we will have dinner together at the Millennium Park Grill. Our reservations will be for 7 PM.

We should be finished by 9.

Unlike previous years with our boat tours, this year you will need to register and pay in advance. I need to pay for the tour in full by Friday, 2 July. The tour is $20. Dinner will be the individual responsibility of the participant (you pay for what you eat/drink).

If you plan to participate in the tour, please send a check for $20 payable to Randy Russell. My address is 5S474 Beau Bien Blvd., Naperville, Ill 60540. I must receive your check by Thursday, 1 July. I will make final payment to the tour operator. You are welcome to bring a guest or two if you choose. Please include the names of your guests in a brief note to me either via email or with the check.

At a recent meeting we collected ideas from members on topics they would like for future meetings to cover. One of the requests was predictive analytics.

Predictive analytics applies sophisticated analytic techniques to your data and discovers insights that you can use to guide both strategic planning and daily interactions. These insights can be applied to influence how people behave as customers, employees, patients, students, and individuals.

At our May 11 meeting, Dr. Jing Shyr will give an overview of predictive analytics and discuss how predictive analytics relates to data mining and statistics modeling. Jing Shyr recently joined IBM through the acquisition of SPSS Inc, where she has been the Chief Statistician and SVP of Technology Group since 1999. Dr. Shyr has served in a number of roles since joining SPSS Inc. in 1986. She began as a statistician, researching and developing new algorithms and statistical methods for the company’s flagship statistical analysis software product, SPSS. Identifying KM objectives: Identifying the top-three objectives of a knowledge management program is a crucial prerequisite.

The objectives of any organization are normally abundantly clear – to make money or to fulfill a particular purpose. The same is true for many organizational activities. But knowledge management, by its very nature, is different. It is multi-faceted and, in many respects, conceptual so that practitioners need to have a clear picture of the results they wish to achieve first before starting a KM program.

The ten commitments: The importance of securing high-level support for knowledge management is widely acknowledged, but little discussed.

The importance of obtaining high-level commitment is referenced in all the best knowledge management guides, but few detail how it should be done. Yet such support is a vital part of KM. It will ensure that your organization thoroughly supports the KM program to be implemented – and a lack of support can defeat a KM initiative before it has even really started.

It's one of the more interesting, and often exasperating, aspects of managing enterprise communities of practice that each -- by necessity -- has its own character and culture, sponsors and managers. Building and maintaining long-term, healthy communities of practice take practice.

Ernst & Young recently sponsored an APQC report entitled Sustaining Effective Communities of Practice . In this study, we partnered with leading KM research organization APQC to study companies that have successfully leveraged Communities of Practice (CoPs) to identify, share and create valuable knowledge. In the research, APQC identified 18 best practices that enable organizations to sustain thriving, impactful CoPs. These best practices are organized around 5 themes:

1. Create a sustainable community strategy
2. Practices and approaches for sustaining communities
3. Tools and resources for community managers
4. Promote awareness and communicate value
5. Measures

The best practices identified in the report address the organizational challenges that often prevent the launch of successful CoPs and offer a guide for how they can be woven deeply within the fabric of an organization. Talking about the report will be Darrin Brogan, an associate director within the EY Center for Business Knowledge, and Brad Kenney, a senior consultant within the EY Advisory practice.

Please join us for our November meeting as Craig Roth will share with us, "Not Your Typical Information Overload Presentation."

It is not difficult to find confirmation that there is “too much information”. Declaring “e-mail bankruptcy” is the new fad. Meanwhile others pooh-pooh the “information overload” crowd as a bunch of hand-wringing complainers who haven’t adjusted to new technology yet. There’s no “right” answer in the debate between those that believe information overload will soon cause the heads of information workers will begin to pop like popcorn as they slump over in their fuzzy cubicles and those that believe we’re just adapting to the new flow. Instead, this presentation will find a way around “information overload” to a more actionable approach: enterprise attention management (EAM). EAM focuses on how enterprises can help information workers to pull the important messages forward and push the less important messages back. Whether you see information overload as a crisis or just one more thing people are adapting to, improving efficiency is something everyone should be able to get behind.

Dave Snowden will join us downtown to lead a discussion on his “7 Principles of Knowledge Management,” summarized below:

Knowledge can only be volunteered it cannot be conscripted. You can’t make someone share their knowledge, because you can never measure if they have. You can measure information transfer or process compliance, but not knowledge.
We only know what we know when we need to know it. Human knowledge is deeply contextual and requires stimulus for recall. Unlike computers we do not have a list-all function. Small verbal or nonverbal clues can provide those ah-ha moments when a memory or series of memories are suddenly recalled, in context to enable us to act.
In the context of real need few people will withhold their knowledge. A genuine request for help is not often refused unless there is literally no time or a previous history of distrust. On the other hand ask people to codify all that they know in advance of a contextual enquiry and it will be refused (in practice it’s impossible anyway). Linking and connecting people is more important than storing their artifacts.
Everything is fragmented. We evolved to handle unstructured fragmented fine granularity information objects, not highly structured documents. People will spend hours on the internet, or in casual conversation without any incentive or pressure. However creating and using structured documents requires considerably more effort and time. Our brains evolved to handle fragmented patterns not information.
Tolerated failure imprints learning better than success. When my young son burnt his finger on a match he learnt more about the dangers of fire than any amount of parental instruction cold provide. All human cultures have developed forms that allow stories of failure to spread without attribution of blame. Avoidance of failure has greater evolutionary advantage than imitation of success. It follows that attempting to impose best practice systems is flying in the face of over a hundred thousand years of evolution that says it is a bad thing.
The way we know things is not the way we report we know things. There is an increasing body of research data which indicates that in the practice of knowledge people use heuristics, past pattern matching and extrapolation to make decisions, coupled with complex blending of ideas and experiences that takes place in nanoseconds. Asked to describe how they made a decision after the event they will tend to provide a more structured process oriented approach which does not match reality. This has major consequences for knowledge management practice.
We always know more than we can say, and we will always say more than we can write down. This is probably the most important. The process of taking things from our heads, to our mouths (speaking it) to our hands (writing it down) involves loss of content and context. It is always less than it could have been as it is increasingly codified.

Dave Snowden is the founder and chief scientific officer of Cognitive Edge. His work is international in nature and covers government and industry looking at complex issues relating to strategy, organisational decision making and decision making. He has pioneered a science based approach to organisations drawing on anthropology, neuroscience and complexity.

He is currently leading a series of experimental programmes to create a new approach to measuring impact in public services, in the areas of health, education and social policy. This has involved the design of a new research tool to capture qualitative and quantitative data in social contexts using self-signifed narrative, based on ethnographic principles. This is currently in pilot with the UK Government, the Government of Singapore together with a major hospital in New York and various Indigenous projects in Australia.

He previously worked for IBM where he was a Director of the Institution for Knowledge Management and founded the Cynefin Centre for Organisational Complexity; during that period he was selected by IBM as one of six “on-demand” thinkers for a world wide advertising campaign. Prior to that he worked in a range of strategic and management roles in the service sector.

His company Cognitive Edge exists to integrate academic thinking with practice in organisations throughout the world and operates on a network model working with Academics, Government, Commercial Organisations, NGOs and Independent Consultants.

This year for our July annual social event we will be taking a boat ride from Wendella Boats. Each person who wants to attend should buy their own ticket online at www.wendellaboats. com. Buy tickets for the combined river and lake cruise that leaves at 6 PM on Tuesday, 14 July. The boat ride is an architectural tour and will travel on the Chicago River as well as Lake Michigan. The trip lasts 90 minutes. Snacks and drinks are available for purchase on the boat.

I suggest buying your tickets on line right away as these trips sometimes sell out. I also suggest arriving at the dock 15 minutes before departure.

The dock is located at the base of the Wrigley Building at 400 N. Michigan Ave. You will descend a set of stone steps to the dock. Following the boat ride we will move to Catch 35 for dinner. The restaurant is at 35 W. Wacker Dr. in the ground floor for the Leo Burnett Building. A 5 minute walk from the boat dock. Our reservations are at 7:45 under my name (Randy Russell). I have reserved space for 15 people and I can change the number as necessary. Catch 35 has a wide variety of food for every taste but the focus is seafood. Their website is www.catch35. com.

Measuring and understanding the impact that knowledge sharing is having on an organization can be complex and time consuming. Using a case study from Accenture, this presentation takes a look at its KM measurement model approach and the impact that knowledge sharing has on its organization. It illustrates how to build and implement a framework for measuring the impact of KM initiatives, including calculation of ROI (return on investment). The Accenture study was recognized as the “2007 Best Impact Study” by the ROI Institute.

As a Senior Manager within Accenture’s knowledge management practice, Mr. Kaukonen is responsible for driving several global initiatives related to collaboration and knowledge sharing – primarily around the acquisition of content and the marketing and communications of our capabilities to the practice. He is also responsible for the metrics and measurement capabilities related to knowledge sharing. Mr. Kaukonen has been with Accenture (a global consulting, technology and outsourcing company) for 17 years - with 13 years of knowledge management related experience. He started in July of 1992 working within Accenture's consulting practice. In a Web 2.0 or social networking world, content can be quickly generated, ephemeral and highly personalized. The tools also enable collaboration, customization, mashups. What does this mean for the knowledge manager? Can the information be reused through a Slice ‘n dice – chunking and enhanced by user contributions – user generated knowledge bases? Can folksonomies supplemented by social tagging be controlled with taxonomic structures for long term use?
This talk covers some case examples of the intersection between the free association of ideas in Web 2.0 and organized knowledge capture and storage.

Marjorie M.K. Hlava is President, Chairman, and founder of Access Innovations, Inc. She founded the company in 1978 and it is now in its 30th year. The company provides information management services such as metatagging, thesaurus and taxonomy creation workflow consulting. In short, all services to create and maintain a digital information collection. The company owns the Data Harmony software for Content creation, taxonomy management, metadata and entity extraction, automatic summarization, and automatic indexing for portals and data collections. In creating well formed data we can significantly enhance search results.

She is very well known in the international information arena. She is past president of NFAIS (2002-2003), the organization of those who create, organize and distribute information. Ms. Hlava is past president of the American Society for Information Science and Technology - 1993 (ASIST) and the 1996 recipient of ASIST's prestigious Watson Davis Award, twice a member of the Board of Directors of SLA (formerly known as the Special Libraries Association), 5 year member of the Board of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), past President of the Board of Documentation Abstracts, and has held numerous committee and other positions in these and other organizations. She has published more than two hundred articles and books on information science topics.

Marjorie holds software patents. Her research areas include furthering the productivity of content creation and the governance layer for information access through automated indexing, thesaurus development, taxonomy creation, natural language processing, machine translations, and machine aided indexing. She has given countless presentations domestically and internationally, including keynote addresses. She has given workshops and lectures on thesaurus development, taxonomy creation, natural language processing, machine translations, and machine aided indexing.

She is also president of the Hubbell House Alliance restoring a spacious historic adobe home on 10 acres which served as a ranch headquarters, coaching inn on the El Camino Real, trading post, post office and mercantile.

Such application could conceivably modify curriculums, assure that newer faculty can be better prepared, collect (and use) lessons learned in academic administration, and creating new models for education and learning.

Alan Burns will speak on his KM experiences both within the institution and lessons learned from setting up his Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) tools as both professor and law student. Alan Burns has been a student of Knowledge Management for over 12 years. He leads a double life as a professor teaching IS and KM courses at DePaul University's School of Computing and Digital Media and as a 3L student in DePaul's School of Law.

Alan's research interests are expanding beyond KM to legal aspects of IT, as well as copyrights, patents, and other forms of intellectual property. His educational background includes a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, an MBA, and a PhD in Business. Prior to academia he worked for over 13 years in the corporate world in a variety of positions of engineering, management and project management.

Jean Egmon will lead an interactive session on the integration of knowledge management and organizational learning. She will present a conceptual framework, cases and conversations around methods for accelerating innovation while achieving cost savings by blending knowledge management and organizational learning into “design experiments.”

Jean Egmon is the executive director of the Ford Center Network, a division of the Ford Center for Global Citizenship within the Kellogg School of Management where she is also a faculty member. Additionally, she is the director of Northwestern University’s Complexity in Action Network. Jean is also the president of Third Angle, Inc. Jean’s work focuses on spotting & leveraging interdependencies across value networks. This means synthesizing information and ideas from diverse sources, working with companies to spot the “third angle,” i.e., a higher order concept of “simple elegance” that enables clients to meet multiple needs of multiple stakeholders at once. From there, she works with clients to design strategies and environments to innovate and make decisions that create a pull for participation across the networks.

Applications of this expertise include: uncovering and exploring new market niches; engaging cross-boundary collaboration for invention and innovation; designing new things to be more easily adopted & viral across customers and employees; employing a design method where interdisciplinary teams approach a variety of business questions with a design mindset and iterate with end users; and designing work to be done by networks.

Join us on December 9th for our annual KM Chicago holiday meeting.
Wine Expressions' Randy Russell will host an event at our meeting,
scheduled from 5:30-7 PM at the Dow Jones location downtown only (Dow
Jones, One South Wacker Drive, 22nd floor (corner of Wacker and
Madison).)

As he have done in the past, Randy will present 6-7 wines and an
associated food paired with each wine. He will give a brief
description of the grape, region, producer and why we paired it with
the particular food. There will be a combination of white and red
wines. He will answer questions about the wines and try to address
any other wine questions that arise. Additionally we would like to
enlist your ideas for topics for next year's meetings. To encourage
your ideas, we'll set up topic areas so that we can gather your ideas
and also to encourage informal sharing and conversations re: what's
on everyone's plates these days.

The cost for the event will be $20, same as last year. We would like
your RSVPs by Friday, 5 December so we can plan for the food.

Apologies for the late notice, but we hope you can still join us to hear IBM’s Bill Learned present how IBM uses social computing (i.e., profiles and social networks, blogs, wikis, tag clouds, etc.) within their enterprise, and the value they derive from using those tools. IBM’s implementations of Web 2.0 technologies, including Lotus Mashups and Lotus Connections has been in the KM news a lot this past year. It should be interesting to get a perspective on what they are doing and how these implementations are going directly from the source.

Bill Learned, IBM - Lotus Collaboration Sales Leader for Central Region, started with IBM in 1997 as the Senior Lotus Systems Consultant for General Motors, DaimlerChrylser and Delphi Automotive and held global responsibility for the IBM/Lotus technical relationship with those IBM customers. Starting July of 2000 Bill joined the Lotus World Wide Technology Advocate Group and delivered strategic briefings, seminars and enablement sessions for IBM customers. Bill joined the World Wide WebSphere Portal Sales Team in 2002 and provided portal sales leadership in Europe and the Middle East. From 2003 through mid 2006 Bill managed the Technical Sales team for Portal and Workplace in the United States, Central Region - North. Bill led a team of seven technical sales specialists responsible for the selling of, and customer success with, WebSphere Portal and Lotus collaboration software solutions. Last year Bill managed a team of sales and technical professionals across all IBM Software Brands charged with opening new markets and accounts for IBM. Currently Bill is the Lotus Collaboration Sales Leader for IBMs Central North Business Unit. Bill holds a BA from Michigan State University and MBA from the University of Detroit.

September 9 Meeting Notice

In August we heard from Yuval Tarsi concerning the Web 2.0 capabilities and how the company he helped found, Worklite, plays in that space. In September we will get another perspective on Web 2.0 from Chuck Pendell from Connectbeam. Chuck writes “Enterprise users of Web 2.0 technologies are creating new information silos of valuable user generated content which cannot be widely accessed. Connectbeam Spotlight enables the capture and management of this content into a single repository, making it easy to share across the entire organization. As a result, employees gain immediate access to knowledge and expertise which previously they never even knew existed.” Chuck will discuss the issues, demonstrate his product and engage the group in questions and answers.

Chuck Pendell is Vice President of Sales for Connectbeam. Chuck brings more than two decades of high tech sales and management experience to Connectbeam. Most recently, he was VP of Sales for Active Decisions; a consumer product guided selling technology. Active Technologies was acquired by Knova. His career includes sales and management positions with Burroughs/Unisys, Saros/Filenet, Action Technologies, Movaris, and Selectica (NASDAQ: SLTC), where he built the worldwide sales and field support team from three members to over 100, resulting in the highly successful Selectica IPO in March of 2000.

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Chuck graduated from Washington State University with a BS in Business Administration.

Lorri Zipperer will lead a dialogue to explore the integration of
corporate knowledge management concepts into clinical and
administrative health care environments. The challenges and
opportunities in this translational work will be discussed in the
context that this "hybrid" thinking will ultimately affect many of
us who interact with healthcare as knowledge workers, caregivers and
patients. In addition, this strategy will be explored as a catalyst
for new opportunities for information professionals and knowledge
mangers in clinical environments.

Lorri Zipperer, Cybrarian is the principal at Zipperer Project
Management, in Evanston, Illinois. Lorri has been in the information
field for over two decades, over half of which have been focused on
health care. She was a founding staff member of the National Patient
Safety Foundation as the information project manager. While there,
she provided the structure and scope for the NPSF's Clearinghouse,
discussion list, literature awareness and web page initiatives. Ms.
Zipperer was the managing editor of Enhancing Patient Safety and
Reducing Errors in Health Care, the proceedings of the 1998
Annenberg meeting in Rancho Mirage, California, Lessons in Patient
Safety, a compendium of important topics and literature in patient
safety and presently serves as managing editor for the NPSF's
newsletter Focus on Patient Safety. Ms. Zipperer currently works
with clients to provide patient safety information, knowledge
sharing and general project management guidance. Lorri has recently
led projects in patient safety educational tool and curriculum
development, evidence identification for a variety of publications
and organizational visioning for improved knowledge access and
currently serves as the Cybrarian for AHRQ's Patient Safety Net.

KCS (Knowledge-Centered Support) is a methodology for knowledge management in support organizations.

Few will argue with the positive effects the KCS methodology can have on an organization but when the time comes to measure whether adoption and impact are being realized, good analytics can be difficult to come by. InQuira's Tom Melzl will provide a brief introduction to KCS and apply specific aspects of the KCS operational model to metrics using real life business scenarios. Tom will also speak to tracking ROI and provide information on some companies that have delivered significant ROIs by following Knowledge Management best practices.

The Consortium for Service Innovation (www.serviceinnovation.org), a not-for-profit alliance of service and support organizations, developed the KCS Verified program to distinguish knowledge management vendors whose products meet the practical requirements outlined in the KCS Verified Criteria. This presentation and discussion will present an approach to locate and prioritize KM tasks within a busy place, help to identify key discoveries at a regional office KM initiative and describe successful coping strategies for surviving.

With an info-glut, the discernment of what's important and useful is a intensive task for folks. The 90s proved that KM is not merely a technology issue, nor is it simply an organizational culture issue, but it's more like an "information plumbing" issue. Working with people with "information pain" suggests opportunities for KM development. Usable interfaces, data-collection processes, report building, effective intranets, and consistent information storage are all building blocks for an overarching KM strategy that combines people, processes, and information. Dave Simmons, Knowledge Management Specialist for the U.S. GSA/Public Building Service will present his take on starting and sustaining a new KM initiative within a busy service.

Dave Simmons is a Certified Knowledge Manager (CKM) with KM experience in both private and public sectors. Prior to working for the US Government, Dave ran his own business intelligence and research business, was the Director of Prosepect Management and Research for Chicago's Children's Memorial Foundation, and was the Director of Knowledge Management for Global Operations at LEGO Systems A/S in Billund, Denmark (yes, LEGO toys). Dave has worked in information technology and management areas for well over 20 years.

This presentation and discussion, led by Deloitte's Stuart Rosenberg, will focus on Deloitte's internal implementation of iConnect (Tacit Software). Stuart Rosenberg is currently a Senior Program Manager within the National Knowledge Management Group at Deloitte. Prior to receiving his MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, Stuart held various operations and manufacturing roles at Johnson & Johnson's Ortho-McNeil pharmaceutical division. He joined Deloitte Consulting in 1997 and spent the next 2 years working primarily on process improvement projects for financial services and telecom clients. In 1999, he began working on an internal project to develop the Firm's first web-based global portal and knowledge management system. Kate Pugh of Intel and Nancy Dixon of Common Knowledge discuss Knowledge Harvesting
Knowledge “harvesting” programs -- such as post-mortems, Action-in-Reviews, and Lessons Learned – have three major objectives. 1.) Real-time team and individual insight; 2.) Improve team’s processes; and 3.) Reuse by the larger organization. Many organizations fail to achieve these objectives, or feel they don’t get a return on their knowledge capture and reuse efforts.
We argue that you need to “harvest with reuse in mind,” and that integrated, well-planned and well-facilitated harvesting does pay off. We tailored our harvesting approaches in response to 10 environmental and business factors, such as criticality of the knowledge, perishability of knowledge, technical complexity, the need for safety, team proximity, hierarchical barriers, and team size. We sought to answer questions like:
What is the appropriate format (interview, focus group, panel)?
When does the facilitator need to ensure originating teams’ anonymity?
When do you need to enlist external SMEs to help with the inquiry?
What “anchors” a group discussion (on topic, on insight, as opposed to blame)?
We will be describing this approach and look forward to a lively discussion about what has worked at your organizations!

March meeting: speaker change

Our original speaker is not able to attend the March meeting, but KM Chicago member Curtis Conley has graciously offered to step in at the last moment to talk about the KM program at Perkins Eastman and the connection to his PhD research on critical success factors in KM.

Curtis Conley is a Knowledge Resource Team Coordinator at Perkins Eastman, a global architecture firm recognized as an operational and thought leader. Working in the downtown Chicago location of Perkins Eastman, Curtis is responsible for overseeing the KM processes in the Chicago, Toronto, Oakland, and Shanghai offices. Additionally, Curtis is currently a doctoral candidate at Northern Illinois University. He is earning his degree in Adult Education with a cognate in Knowledge Management. Curtis also holds an MBA and Bachelors degree in Organizational Management. His current research interests include the critical success factors for KM, the integration of KM within strategic planning processes, organizational learning, and human resource development.

Curtis will provide an overview of the KM program at Perkins Eastman, both current practices and an agenda for the future. In addition, Curtis will also discuss his dissertation topic which aims at providing KM practitioners with a holistic framework of the critical success factors for KM.

Where do knowledge management, honest voices, and technology meet to deliver learning and sales enablement results? This presentation will share what we (StoryQuest) have learned over a 3 year journey, from stories, to mobile audio, to peer based learning, to podcasting and knowledge harvesting. All offer value but none deliver learning and value in and of themselves. The most important thing we have learned is that in order to deliver value we must deliver ALL of the following:
A - Compelling content. If the content is not interesting, it well never get used and consumed. (Instructionally sound content is not necessarily compelling or interesting)
B – Multiple mediums and delivery methods. Web, CDs, Podcasting, elearning – all offer value, but nothing works for everyone.
C – Client and user support. The greatest product in the world goes nowhere unless it is promoted, supported and measured properly. This is an area we are still learning about, but we have learned a lot.

This presentation will share learnings about the use of stories, peer-based learning, mobile learning and sales enablement.

We have the following speakers confirmed for the January 9th meeting of KM Chicago, How Knowledge Management is impacted by YOU, Time magazine's person of the year.

Moderator: Jack Vinson. Jack is the past-president of KM Chicago and has been involved in knowledge management since the late 1990's. He's currently doing independent management consulting in knowledge management with a focus on helping organizations get the best use out of their people, information and technology.

PANELISTS
Brian Sobolak is the current maintainer of Chicagobloggers.com as well as a contributor to local webzine Gapersblock.com. He's been creating websites since 1996 and a regular blogger since 2001. By day he is an enterprise software delivery manager in the Loop.

Dave Elfving. After graduating from the University of Iowa, Dave spent 5 years working as a web designer in both the public and private sectors. He began at a boutique design firm (which, like so many others, no longer exists) and went on to develop web sites and online applications for the Chicago Public Schools and The University of Chicago. He has been an active blogger (though he dislikes that term) for years, and was interviewed by National Public Radio as an early pioneer of "audio blogging". Currently, he's finishing up graduate degree in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he studies web-based, collaborative technologies.

Barbara K. Iverson is a long-time multimedia maven and a blogger since 1999. She teaches, writes and speaks about blogging, citizen journalism, digital technology, and online media publication at Columbia College Chicago and around the world.

Iverson is the new VP for Technology for Association of Women Journalists(AWJ) and belongs to Media Bloggers Association (MBA,) the Online News Association (ONA,) Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE.0 She serves as advisor to the Student Satellite Chapter of Chicago Headline Club and is a member of CHC and SPJ. Iverson has written for magazines and been a reporter for Ohmynews.com.

Iverson's innovative use of electronic technology in teaching has been recognized by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS,) the Lilly Endowment, Fund for Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) and J-Lab & John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. She and Suzanne McBride currently have a J-Lab grant to develop an online community around citizen journalism in Chicago. Barbara returned recently from teaching at DIT (Dublin Institute of Technology) in Ireland where she was part of an academic exchange program.

Before arriving in Journalism, Iverson produced the first webcast from an American museum in 1998, featuring an interactive exhibit at the MCA by Miroslaw Rogala and an interactive CD-ROM about the Tuskegee Airmen in 1994. In her formative years, Barbara K. Iverson was a teacher for the Chicago Public Schools and subsequently elected to serve as a community member of the John Palmer LSC.

Did you see the Time Magazine's Person of the Year in 2006? It was the collective "you," based on all the work you are doing to create content on blogs, YouTube, wikis and many other interesting technologies. Have you heard the buzz in the technology world about a second phase of web-based technologies that build off this stuff to create newer, better services for their users? This is the time of user-generated content and Web 2.0 technology.

What has this to do with knowledge management? Come to the January KM Chicago meeting for discussions of this and many other questions, and see some examples of Web 2.0 tools and services.

The panel will consist of several Chicago-based people who are experts in Web2.0 and have experience in knowledge management. These include Barbara Iverson, a Journalism & New Media Professor at Columbia College, and David Elfing, an expert in collaborative technologies and graduate student at UIC. The Knowledge Brain Drain

At the September 12th KM Chicago meeting, Rickie Tinimbang will present his master's Capstone research on The Knowledge Brain Drain. Mr. Tinimbang is interested in the problem of the retiring workforce, as senior employees leave companies due to retirement, leaving a smaller workforce with less experience. How will this impact the companies they leave? What can businesses do about it?

One option is to ensure knowledge transfer from the senior staff to junior staff through mentoring programs. Mr. Tinimbang will report on the mentoring program at a leading Fortune 500 company that specializes in risk management and consulting services.

Mr. Tinimbang is about to complete his Master's of Learning and Organizational Change at Northwestern. He is Administrator and Chief Operating Officer for Donnarich Home Health Care Inc., a provider of home healthcare services based in Lincolnwood, Illinois.

Lisa has had extensive experience with offshoring of knowledge management activities at her recent position with Heidrick & Struggles, which she left 6 months ago, and also has experience with it at Deloitte Consulting. She will discuss why her organizations decided to offshore and how well it worked; what activities lend themselves to offshoring and tips for a successful implementation. How flat IS the world of knowledge management? We're sure Lisa's comments will generate a lively audience discussion about the pros and cons of offshoring KM activities.
Bio: Lisa Beckers is responsible for understanding the priorities and strategy of Deloitte Consulting Americas regional leadership and translating that into the global KM strategy, along with the other regional KM managers. Her current focus is to develop performance measures for KM firmwide for Deloitte Consulting, including reward and recognition programs. Prior to Deloitte Consulting, Lisa spent 10 years at Heidrick & Struggles International, a global executive recruitment company, where she held a number of roles with the company including Global Practices Information Manager and Business Process Reengineering Manager. All her roles included knowledge management – from creating a KM function, to developing offshore activities as well as taxonomy redesign. Lisa held several research-focused roles before that in engineering and law. She holds a graduate degree in Library & Information Science from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and an undergraduate degree in English from University of California, Berkeley.

Stefan Lafloer is an organizational intelligence and knowledge management senior project manager and management consultant. As the CKO of InsightKnowledge Inc., he is focusing on strategic business consulting and project management in the knowledge management (KM) and organizational intelligence (OI) area. Bio: Stan Garfield is responsible for Worldwide Consulting & Integration Knowledge Management for Hewlett-Packard. He joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1983 and launched Digital's first knowledge management program in 1996. Stan helped develop the corporate KM strategy for Compaq. He holds a degree in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis.

HP and Digital Equipment Corp. each started a KM program for their consulting businesses in 1996. Through the subsequent years, the organizations changed frequently, culminating in the merger of Compaq and HP in 2002.

The newly-merged consulting & integration business had to deal with different cultures, KM systems, and personnel. The KM program has continued to experience significant change, including system migrations, team membership, and leadership.

Our challenge has been to move from an emphasis on technology to an approach that balances people, process, and technology. We are also managing a demanding list of projects with a very small team.

KM in the Asia-Pacific region
Scarcely a days goes by when we do not hear about the current and future economic impact of China and various other countries from the Asia Pacific region. Accenture has had a knowledge management presence in Asia since the mid 1990s. Two key people from their respective operating groups will discuss the evolving role of knowledge management at Accenture and their roles in developing and delivering knowledge services in Asia and around the world. Both of these women have been associated with knowledge management at Accenture for more than a decade. They have served their operating groups very ably during that time and have made many contributions to the global knowledge management efforts at Accenture. They and their respective teams have contributed to millions of dollars in consulting revenues over the past few years. Living and working in Asia they have a unique perspective on the cultural, language and technology barriers encountered by consultants in the region. Tanya Brincat
Financial Services Knowledge Management, Accenture

Tanya Brincat has been involved in Knowledge Management since its inception at Accenture in 1992. She was seconded to Accenture's WHQ in Chicago in October 1992 where she spent 4 years working on the design, development and rollout of the core suite of databases to be made available on Accenture’s knowledge management system, the Knowledge XchangeTM.

Since 1996 Tanya has served as a Knowledge Manager for the Financial Services Operating Group (Financial Services is one of the largest industry groups in Accenture with 12,000+ practice personnel globally; $3.4bn revenues in FY2005). After spending one year with the Financial Services Knowledge Management team in New York, Tanya returned to her native Australia where she currently serves as the Financial Services Knowledge Management lead for Asia Pacific (responsible for the provision of knowledge equipping and knowledge harvesting services to the FS practice in Asia Pacific) and the Global Head of Banking Knowledge Management (responsible for managing all Banking related knowledge capital on Accenture’s Knowledge XchangeTM and for developing all internal Banking communications).

Prior to her Knowledge Management assignment at Accenture Tanya spent 4 years as a Management Consultant in Accenture's Change Management practice, where she specialised in instructional design. Tanya holds a Bachelor of Behavioural Science from La Trobe University (Melbourne, Australia).

Myrna A. Binamira
Director, Government Knowledge Network, Accenture

Myrna A. Binamira joined Accenture in 1995. Prior to that she was working for the Philippine Government and served for almost 18 years, the last 7 of which was as the CIO for the Department of Agriculture. As the CIO, she was in charge of the Department's IT and IS Program nationwide, and headed the Department's Computer Center. After that Government stint, she joined a private systems integrator company where she found herself selling Microsoft and Lotus Notes software. Sales turned out to be not her cup of tea so after a year of doing that, she went back to job searching and found this ad for Andersen Consulting.

They were looking for a Director for their Government Knowledge Center. Needless to say, she got the job and had to start the organization from scratch. That was the most challenging job yet ever she had to face, but definitely also the most rewarding. Not very many people can actually single-handedly choose the people who will work for them. She has since then managed the KM Program of the Government Operating Group of Accenture and continues to do it with the same passion as when she started.
